Author: Brooke Willis

My name is Brooke Willis and I am currently a student at SAE, studying a Bachelor of Animation. I have had a huge interest in writing stories and creating cartoon characters ever since I could put pen to paper (or crayon to wall). When I realized this was something I could do professionally it immediately became my dream career. I've only just begun to learn the ropes of 3D max, but I'm hoping with a bit of persistence I'll eventually master the mysterious realm of 3D animation.

Film Shot Deconstruction

For my World Builders group project I am doing a film deconstruction to help with the composition of my own scene. I have chosen to deconstruct a scene from Braveheart of a single sword standing after a battle. The feel of this scene is what … Continue reading Film Shot Deconstruction

Beginning My Specialization

For my Specialization project for this trimester I have decided to design, model and rig a character. If I have time I would also like to be able to do a small animation with them. I’m still unsure what aspect of 3D interests me the most but for the time being I am happy being a generalist. I would really like to improve my 3D modelling skills however, especially when it comes to characters as I have not had a good go at creating a more complex character model before. Rigging is also something I have limited experience in but want to improve, as I will be in charge of rigging the characters for my group final project.

What sort of work would you like to be producing in 5 years?

I want to be creating humorous characters and/or animations for children’s TV shows.

What are the quality standards of work expected in that area?

The quality standards for TV are not quite as high as for movies but models need to be well polished and look very visually appealing and animations need to run smoothly and be believable.

Evaluate your current skillset.

Right now my skill set is quite mediocre. I haven’t been able to pinpoint one thing I want to do and therefore have stretched myself over modelling, 3D animation, 2D animation and concept art. I believe I am better at 2D work, especially concepting characters but I still have a lot to learn about it. I have got the basic principles of animation but am not yet at the level I need for industry standard work and my modelling skills, while improving, need to get to a point where it is easy for me to work quickly and efficiently.

What do you need to learn and improve on to get there?

To get to an industry work level I really need to narrow down my focus to a few areas so I can improve those skills. Therefore this trimester I will be focusing most of my time on modelling while still giving myself the chance to improve my other rigging and animation skills a bit. I need to learn how to make a character with the best use of topology that will work well with an appropriate rig.

Set some goals in your craft to hit for this trimester.

I would like to concept my own appealing character design and then model said character to a professional standard. I also want to apply a working rig, including facial rig and create a short animation with my character even if it’s just a simple body movement or facial expression to show the rig working.
